Indianapolis Airport Authority’s Sustainability Toolkit Earns Multiple Industry Awards
The Indianapolis Airport Authority (IAA) was honored with an Airports Council International – North America (ACI-NA) 2020 Environmental Achievement Award for their “Comprehensive & Scalable Sustainability Toolkit,” which won in the Environmental Mitigation category. The annual Environmental Achievement Awards acknowledge the achievements and dedication of ACI-NA members and the many innovative environmental efforts taking place at airports. Winners in each category were selected by a panel of judges who reviewed the projects’ environmental benefits, innovation, effective implementation, widespread applicability, and cost-effectiveness. In addition, the Sustainability Toolkit earned IAA the Airports Going Green 2020 Award for Outstanding Sustainability Program, recognizing IAA’s contributions to the pursuit of sustainability within the aviation industry. The annual Airports Going Green awards celebrate the accomplishments of projects, programs, and persons that foster aviation sustainability achievement and innovation. C&S Engineers, Inc., was honored to play a role in the creation of IAA’s Sustainability Toolkit.
C&S has assisted the IAA with many facets of sustainability, including program management, planning, and integration into design and construction. Drawing on this work and experience with airport planning and engineering across the country, C&S helped IAA develop the tailored Sustainability Toolkit with user-friendliness and flexibility in mind. The Toolkit enables IAA project teams to identify and track value-add sustainability strategies customized based on airport-relevant project types. The Toolkit also correlates actions to rating system credits to support award/certification. In-person and video-based training resources were developed to educate staff on the benefits of incorporating sustainability and how to use the Toolkit, helping to ensure adoption within the organization.
C&S’s dedicated aviation sustainability practice guides airports through sustainability planning and implementation. Services include supporting certification across many of the commonly pursued sustainable rating systems, including LEED and Envision. C&S currently boasts more than 30 Envision Sustainability Professionals and has administered the Envision process for five Envision-awarded projects, including one at IAA’s Eagle Creek Airpark. Other Envision projects include two at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, one at T.F. Green Airport, and one for Los Angeles County’s General William J. Fox Airfield.
