C&S and Gerald R. Ford International Airport Receives 2024 Commercial Airport Project of the Year

C&S Companies’ Fast Track Fuel Facility 2024 Commercial Airport Project of the Year.

The Great Lakes Chapter – American Association of Airport Executives (GLC-AAAE) recognizes C&S’s Field Maintenance Fast Track Fuel Facility project at Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR) with the 2024 Commercial Airport Project of the Year—Airfield, in Lexington, Kentucky on July 27th, 2024.

The Gerald R. Ford International Airport Authority (GFIAA) needed to build a 60,000-square-foot Snow Removal Equipment (SRE) building at their Field Maintenance facility in Grand Rapids, MI. However, the existing fuel and runway de-icing chemical facility was in the way. To address this, GFIAA contracted with C&S to quickly design and provide construction services for a new fuel and chemical facility and remove the old infrastructure.

The new fuel facility includes two 12,000-gallon fireguard aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) with double-wall steel for fire protection and secondary containment. These tanks are positioned end-to-end, allowing up to eight vehicles to be fueled simultaneously. Fueling is managed by submersible pumps and four two-hose remote dispensers, activated by proximity fobs. The entire area is covered by a large canopy with lighting and security cameras.

The de-icing chemical facility features three 20,000-gallon polyethylene ASTs, with space for a fourth tank in the future. These tanks are surrounded by concrete curbing for secondary containment. An equipment shed houses all transfer equipment and electrical components. The fuel transfer and dispensing areas drainage system is equipped with an oil-stop valve for secondary containment.

Extensive site work was required, including demolishing structures, relocating a water main and hydrant, moving airport security fencing, adding driveways, and performing related drainage and grading work.

This project required the involvement of several disciplines that C&S Companies was able to provide in-house including architectural, aviation, fueling specialists, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and telecommunications engineers. DLZ provided environmental services. C&S thanks Gerald R. Ford International Airport for the opportunity to provide professional engineering services, Wolverine Building Group for being a great partner during construction, the Great Lakes Chapter – American Association of Airport Executives for this award recognition, and Blue Grass Airport for hosting the event.
