C&S Companies is proud to announce that five of firm’s projects were honored with awards by the American Council of Engineering Companies, New York Chapter, in their annual Engineering Excellence competition.

Platinum Award—Plattsburgh International Airport – Runway 17-35 Rehabilitation-Phase 2

Constructed in 1956, Runway 17-35 required continual repairs to the outdated pavement causing frequent closures in challenging operational conditions over the years. Plattsburgh International Airport provides scheduled air service on a single runway, limiting the ability to maintain safe and efficient operations during repairs. With this rehabilitation, C&S addressed existing pavement deficiencies and delivered a long-term solution to improve the pavement. After developing several alternatives, and working hand in hand with key stakeholders, it was determined that a two-phase construction phasing program was the preferred option for this project. The strategically selected alternative allowed the Contractor to expeditiously progress the work and resulted in the Runway being reopened two weeks earlier than originally scheduled.

Gold Award—Griffiss International Airport – Building 100 Renovation

C&S was responsible for architectural design, engineering, and construction management for the addition and renovation of the central core of Building 100 at Griffiss International Airport. A new 3,000-square-foot entrance brings the renovated core to 43,000-square-feet, across three stories of modern office space. In addition, an 11,000-square-foot state of the art optics lab was built-out in the adjacent hangar. Developing a modern project, in a building built in 1941, and with many physical restrictions, required the integration of technology into the team’s workflow. The team worked together, along with an interiors consultant for furniture design, to complete the project in almost 10% under budget.

Gold Award—Arc of Jefferson-St. Lawrence – Renovation of Main Services Building

C&S provided full architectural and engineering services for the reconstruction/restoration of the main services dayhab building at the Gaffney St. campus. The original building was constructed in 1969 and had one primary addition in 1972. This is the first major renovation project since the addition. The project includes restoration of the existing parking lots and traffic patterns at the bus drop off for the adult dayhab and pre-school locations. The 43,650-square-foot building was completely renovated for better function and efficiency, including all new mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems. The project boasts lots of natural lighting in all of the classrooms along with energy efficient lighting and mechanical systems. The interior environment was designed to provide sustainable and sensory stimulating finishes.

Silver Award—Madison County – New Highway Facility

This project included architecture and engineering design and construction administration services to replace an outdated highway department facility located within the confines of a small town. The new, long-term facility is safer, more cost effective, and efficiently operated, saving employee time and taxpayer dollars. The site design includes a complete layout of the property, which consists of not only the main 53,000-square-foot building, but also a 14-bay cold storage building, material lay-down areas, a fuel facility with 10,000-gallon diesel and unleaded tanks, and a 22,500-square-foot salt storage building. The project was completed under-budget and the ribbon cutting coincided with a 200 person event that honored the County Highway workers, as well as the local Town and Village Highway Departments as they all helped in the effort. 

Silver Award—Steuben County – CR119 Bridge Replacement over Canisteo River

Few bridge projects face the number of major challenges that were encountered on the CR 119 Bridge over the Canisteo River. Between poor horizontal and vertical alignments, a major railroad crossing within 100 feet of the bridge, a stream tributary directly adjacent to the southwest wingwall, and a cemetery in the northeast quadrant, C&S was tasked with developing a design that improved geometry across the bridge and through the railroad crossing while avoiding the cemetery. Further complicating matters was the need to maintain traffic on the existing bridge during construction, as the truck detour was 30 miles long and added over an hour of travel time. By using innovative technologies, working closely with Norfolk Southern, and pushing the ROW process along, the design team was able to meet the required bidding schedule. The new, two-span continuous, steel multi-girder bridge on semi-integral abutments was completed in one construction season for a cost well under budget.
